Located in a vast highland region in the Central-Southern area of the State of Piaui, where the population density is low and absent of profitable economic activities, Itaueira, with its 1,200-hectare of premature dwarf cashew orchard, has the technology for the economically viable agricultural exploitation of Northeastern Brazilian semi-arid highlands, having as its backbone, the cashew-tree.
Itaueira transformed the cashew cultivation from extractive activity into a modern fruit cultivation, by using the best technology available: premature dwarf cashew clones, mechanical pruning, soil protection, mechanical weeding, and soil improvement with straw production by using scythes, organic agriculture, and by developing a mechanized maintenance model of the cashew orchards.
Itaueira decided for organic production, thus avoiding the use of chemicals in its cashew orchards, as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides or fertilizers. As defensives, the company uses, in a preventive way, “Sulfocalcic and Viçosa liquid mixtures”, besides other natural agricultural defensives, looking for the perfect harmonization with nature, with its ecologically sustainable project model.
Thanks to that, Itaueira received, last year, the IBD certification as producer of organic cashew nut.
